Truncated page rank - the concept behind indirect linking

Hello,

After getting some questions regarding my last newsletter on indirect link building
I must admit that this busy month made me forget to mention the source of that theory.

There is a concept that was documented as "truncated page rank" in the
paper "Using Rank Propagation and Probabilistic Counting for Link-Based Spam Detection"

You can download this 2006 paper here

http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/becchetti06using.html

Again, there is a good assumption that people that pay money for links,
only direct it to their own sites... and therefore the "link damping filters"
(or first tier filters) went into place sometime back in 2004 in Google already.

(that was the time that link aging was introduced as well and the good old times of
buying a PR8 sitewide to rank you site QUICK were all gone...)

Here is a quote from the paper

"This function penalizes pages that obtain a large share
of their PageRank from the first few levels of links; we call
the corresponding functional ranking the Truncated Page-
Rank of a page. This is similar to PageRank, except that
the supporters that are too "close" to a target node, do not
contribute towards its ranking."

I encourage you to read the whole paper as it addresses a lot of other possible
filters and effects that I did not address.

Of course this paper alone is not a guarantee on what Google or other Search Engines
do or did, but as usual it helps a lot to read thru it and classify some effects
you monitor based on it.

If you have any questions,
please let me know
